Kansas high school state cross country: Augusta, Clearwater runners win championships
Augusta senior Sawyer Schmidt had just achieved the crowning accomplishment of his running career, yet there was no celebration or acknowledgment.
He had just won the Class 4A individual cross country championship at Wamego Country Club on Saturday, but Schmidt was already more interested in what was happening behind him.
“It was a special moment, but honestly at that point, I was more focused on where my team was,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt is the kind of person who was more happy to see Augusta rise up as the surprise team in the 4A field and snag a third-place team trophy than he was to win an individual state championship.
It was that kind of leadership from Schmidt that helped Augusta bring its team along in the first place this season.
“It was tremendously rewarding to see that because he’s overcome so many struggles and injuries and heartache to get to this moment,” Augusta coach Steve Reichardt said. “To see him finally get to this level, it’s just so fulfilling. And then to see him so happy for the rest of the guys was just pretty special. I’m very proud of this team and how far they’ve come.”
Schmidt was the only Augusta runner who finished in the top-30 of the race and his leading score was crucial in the Orioles (130 team points) edging out Bishop Miege (132) to bring home a team trophy. Augusta’s team was rounded out by Michael Johnson (31st, 18:04), Ryker White (42nd, 18:20), Jacob Dieter (44th, 18:23), Dawson Schmidt (18:42), Grayson Broadbent (18:53) and Grady Fox (19:06).
“I’m so proud of this team because the guys put in a lot of work this summer,” Schmidt said. “It really made my day when I heard that we got third as a team. I’m proud of these guys.”
For Schmidt, it continued a breakout year in 2021 that began with winning the 1600-meter and 3200-meter Class 4A state titles on the track during the spring.
He carried that momentum with him to this fall, as Schmidt (15:54) topped a loaded 4A field that included two former state champions in Buhler’s Tanner Lindahl (16:05) and Topeka Hayden’s Tanner Newkirk (16:24).
“He’s just been tremendous this whole year,” Reichardt said. “Ever since Rim Rock, he’s just exploded. It’s been like, ‘Catch me if you can.’”
“I just love to run,” Schmidt said. “I enjoy going out and running every day. I’m motivated to push myself and see how far I can push myself. It was a really good day for me and the team.”
Other area medalists in the 4A boys race included Circle’s Ian Hunter (fourth, 16:36), WInfield’s Corban Priest (ninth, 16:59) and Andale’s Zachary Winter (18th, 17:22).
Clearwater’s Hayley Trotter brings home another state championship
After winning the 800-meter Class 4A state championship in the spring on the track, Clearwater’s Hayley Trotter was even more motivated to win her first title in cross country.
Trotter did just that on Saturday in dominant fashion, as her time of 19:26 at Wamego Country Club was nearly 40 seconds faster than the field to win the 4A individual title.
“I knew that winning a cross country title would be a big mark for me,” Trotter said. “It was such a great feeling, just knowing that all of my hard work had paid off for me. It was the best feeling in the world, especially knowing that I was done.”
Clearwater coach Jeff Cornwell wasn’t surprised to see Trotter add another title to her collection.
“She just had a really good combination of talent and work ethic,” Cornwell said. “She’s not over-confident or arrogant, but she’s confident in her ability and when you put that together with her talent that makes her a pretty special runner.”
Since she didn’t have any experience racing against Eudora’s top runners, Trotter wanted to push the pace early in the race and grab an early lead. She executed her plan perfectly, as no one could keep up with Trotter early and that allowed her to build an unsurmountable lead.
“I wanted to use the course to help my strategy and that was to take the first two miles out quick and basically put us all in a tired position and put us in pain really early,” Trotter said. “And then it was going to be who could hang on the longest.”
Winfield was able to capture the third-place trophy in the 4A girls race, led by a pair of medalist performances from Kayli Myers (15th, 20:59) and GraceLynn Benavides (17th, 21:04). The Vikings were rounded out by Skylar Flower (24th, 21:25), Lauryn Turner (26th, 21:25), Lydia Nelson (22:04), Shino Inamura (23:00) and Brooke Brogan (24:50).
Other area medalists in the 4A girls race were McPherson’s Chloe Clevenger (seventh, 20:27) and Buhler’s Lindsay Warner (20th, 21:13).
Wichita Trinity boys lay down dominant performance to win 3A title
Every team wants to peak at the state meet, but few pulled it off better than the Wichita Trinity Academy boys team.
All five of the Knights’ scoring runners finished with medalist honors in the top-20 in what became a dominant performance by Trinity to win the Class 3A boys team championship in Wamego. Trinity won with a team score of 35 points, 16 better than second-place Southeast-Saline.
Trinity was led by medalist performances by Clay Shively (second, 16:26), Jacob Hobson (sixth, 16:39), Sam Ferguson (13th, 17:18), Caleb Tofteland (15th, 17:21) and Ian Carroll (17th, 17:25). Rounding out the team was Wesley Ferguson (26th, 17:48) and Ian Boulware (19:25).
Other area medalists in the 3A boys race were the Collegiate brotherly duo of Chris Meyer (fourth, 16:31) and Will Meyer (12th, 17:06).
In the 3A girls race, the only area medalists were Cheney’s Abbye Hudson (14th, 21:04) and Haven’s Taylor Hoskinson (17th, 21:17).
Buhler boys win fourth straight 4A team championship
The significance of what the Buhler boys team was able to accomplish on Saturday, winning the program’s fourth straight Class 4A team championship, was not lost on coach Curtis Morgan.
It’s rare to see the same team win a team title four straight years. It’s even more rare to see a public school do it.
But the Crusaders have a home-grown dynasty that seniors Tanner Lindahl and Hayden Keller helped punctuate with another team title on Saturday.
“Those two have been the foundation of what’s going on here and what they’ve done to put this program on the map is second to none,” Morgan said. “Being around those two kids is like having two more coaches on the team. They eat, drink and sleep this stuff. They’ve laid the foundation and I think we’re going to reap the benefits of this for years to come.”
Since winning the 4A individual title as a freshman in 2018, Lindahl has been the leader for the Crusaders with a top-three finish at state every year. He added another on Saturday with a runner-up finish to lead the scoring for Buhler.
But what sets the Crusaders apart is their depth, which was once again on display again on Saturday with their other six runners — Kaden Lohrentz (11th, 17:09), Keller (16th, 17:21), Austin Lindahl (17th, 17:22), Wyatt Bunce (21st, 17:31), Henry Trumpp (23rd, 17:47) and Cody Bunce (25th, 17:48) — finishing in the top-25 of the race.
“Our motto is, ‘Summer miles bring October smiles,’” Morgan said. “This group did the work during the summer and having that competition every day in practice was huge for the boys. They made a pact that they all wanted to make sure they weren’t satisfied with last year. They wanted to be there as much as possible this summer and they wanted to do it as a team. And that’s what they ended up doing. They won this one together.”
Bishop Carroll boys come away with 5A team trophy
In what turned out to be a loaded Class 5A boys race, Bishop Carroll managed to come away with a third-place team trophy. The Golden Eagles scored 91 team points, led by top-11 finishes from Carson McEachern (fourth, 16:00) and Cole Waymire (11th, 16:23), and finished behind St. Thomas Aquinas (55) and Blue Valley Southwest (69).
Other Carroll runners included Thomas Martin (29th, 16:50), Trenten Zimbelman (40th, 17:05), Connor McKinney (45th, 17:09), Cohen Ayres (46th, 17:10) and Gunnar Leonard (62nd, 17:31).
The only other area medalist also came from the City League, as Kapaun Mt. Carmel’s Luke Brock logged an impressive eighth-place finish overall in the field with a time of 16:18.
In the Class 5A girls race, two-time defending state champion Hope Jackson finished out her career with another top-five finish at the state race with a fifth-place finish in a time of 18:58. She was joined by teammates Landon Forbes (13th, 19:30) and Brooke Martin (19:40, 18th) in the top-20, while Carroll settled for a fifth-place team finish.
The two other area medalists included Maize senior Zoie Ecord, who logged a ninth-place finish in a time of 19:27, and Maize South senior Britton Kelly, who took 11th in a time of 19:27.
In the Class 6A boys race, Wichita Southeast senior Jake Beauchamp was the lone area medalist by placing 11th overall with a time of 16:10.8. There were no area medalists in the 6A girls race.
Remington girls, Berean boys, Classical boys and Pretty Prairie girls earn state trophies
The Remington girls team came three points away from winning the Class 2A team championship, scoring 87 team points — three short of Stanton County.
Remington was led by a pair of medalist performances in Ellie Van Zelfden (fourth, 19:59) and Lucy Brown (11th, 20:21), while the rest of the team was rounded out by Ava Klaassen (32nd, 21:45), Alli Willour (36th, 21:55), Macy Brown (23:03), Kyleigh Hayworth (24:27) and Laila McCormick (24:52).
West Elk’s Josie Ware was the top area finisher in the 2A girls race, taking third in a time of 19:41. She was joined in the top-five by Hillsboro’s Emersyn Funk, who took fifth in 20:04.
Berean Academy logged a second-place finish in the Class 2A boys team race on the strength of medalist performances by Eli Nord (11th, 17:03) and Andrew Harder (17:03). The rest of the team was rounded out by Trevor Nusz (18:12), Isaac Snook (18:30), Zechariah Richards (18:39), Elias Simkins (18:48) and Ethan Kornfeld (19:24).
Other area medalists in the 2A boys race included a pair of top-10 finishes by Hutchinson Trinity in Jonah Godina (fifth, 16:54) and Brendan Kiser (eighth, 16:59).
In the Class 1A boys race, Wichita Classical managed to score a third-place team trophy without a single medalist. Paul Shive (18:18) led the way with a 30th-place finish, as he was joined by Isaac Yourdon (18:32), Ivan Stevens (18:50), Micaiah Wolfe (19:12), Tyler Roush (19:23), Andrew Roush (20:56) and Levi Neumann (22:09).
Area medalists in the 1A boys race included Canton-Galva’s Christian Darrah (second, 16:41), Hutchinson Central Christian’s Blake Yoder (third, 16:48), Pretty Priarie’s James White (eighth, 17:19), Canton-Galva’s Morgan Becker (13th, 17:41) and Little River’s Treyton Olander (15th, 17:50).
Pretty Prairie came away with a third-place trophy in the Class 1A girls team race, highlighted by a third-place overall individually by Abigail White in a time of 20:35. Other team members included Sadie Nisly (23:10), Danae McLeland (23:45), Jaeli Deel (25:28), Cara Shultz (28:04) and Sophia England (32:46).
