All-Metro girls tennis: Some of Kansas’ bests land on The Eagle’s second annual roster
The Eagle’s All-Metro tennis teams are made up of the top two singles players and top two doubles teams from Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties.
This year, two girls from the same team took the two singles spots. Here is the full team from 2019.
Reagan Boleski - Kapaun Mt. Carmel, So., Singles
The only player who seemed to beat her was on her own team.
Boleski wasn’t the best player at Kapaun Mt. Carmel this season, but she was arguably the second-best player in the state. She finished runner-up at the Crusaders’ regional and at the Class 5A state tournament to teammate Clara Whitaker.
Boleski finished 24-4 and earns her first All-Metro honor after finishing third at state as a freshman.
Clara Whitaker - Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Jr., Singles
She is 3-for-3.
With one year left of Whitaker’s Kapaun career, she has three singles state championships after beating teammate and All-Metro selection Reagan Boleski 6-0, 6-0 in the title match.
Whitaker was almost unstoppable this season, finishing with a 30-1 record. She is now 94-5 in her Crusader career.
Sallie Lair, Sr./Lily Conrad, So. - Collegiate, Doubles
They carried on their family names well.
Sallie Lair is the sister of Sydney Lair, who won the Class 4A doubles title last season and earned All-Metro honors. Lily Conrad is the sister of Laklin Conrad, another Collegiate great in distance running and track.
Together in 2019, Sallie and Lily achieved great things in a limited time. They finished runners-up in Class 4A doubles with a final record of 12-4.
Hope Lubbers, Jr./Heidi Lubbers, Jr. - Bishop Carroll, Doubles
There were questions about how Bishop Carroll would rebound from winning the Class 5A team title last season.
The Lubbers doubles pair answered that question with a fourth-place finish in the Class 5A tournament. They finished their season 23-10.
They bounced back from losing the City League and regional titles to perform well at state and make it back-to-back All-Metro honors for Bishop Carroll tennis players, following singles player Brittany Steven’s honor last year.
Dave Hawley - Collegiate, All-Metro Coach of the Year
The best coach in Kansas high school tennis history has his first All-Metro Coach of the Year selection.
Last year, Bishop Carroll’s Darren Huslig earned the honor after taking the Golden Eagles to his first team title. In 2019, Hawley won title No. 45 between his boys and girls teams.
The girls ran away from the field, finishing 22 points ahead of runner-up Buhler. Collegiate had a runner-up finisher and third-place finisher in Class 4A doubles and the state champion, freshman Emma Montovani, along with another consolation title in singles.
