All-Metro girls golf: State champions named to the Eagle’s second annual team

The Eagle’s Varsity Kansas All-Metro girls golf team is made up of the top six high school players from Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties.

Here are the selections from the 2019 season, our second annual team.

Morgan Brasser - Andale, Sr.

Brasser was the best state golfer in the Wichita area this year.

An All-Metro selection last year, too, Brasser is the only player out of Class 4A on this year’s team. She won the 4A individual state championship in 2019, shooting a 16-over 158.

She was the only player in the field to shoot a round under 80 strokes, going down to 78 on the second day. She won the tournament by 10 strokes over Buhler’s Haley Miller.

Alexa Garrett - Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Fr.

Garrett is the first freshman to land on an All-Metro golf team, boys or girls.

Garrett finished eighth at the Class 5A state tournament with a 27-over 168. She had a low round on day 2 of 81, tied for the third-lowest second day score in 5A.

She was the second-best freshman in the state behind Topeka Seaman’s Lois Deeter, who shot a 26-over 168.

Shauna Lee - Andover Central, Jr.

In her first season at Andover Central since transferring across town, Lee didn’t lose any production.

An All-Metro selection last year at Andover, Lee finished third at the Class 5A state tournament with a 24-over 166. She was just four shots behind former teammate Madison Slayton, a fellow All-Metro selection.

Lee sat runner-up in the individual standings after the first round with 82 strokes.

Lexie Ridder - Maize, Jr.

Ridder has been one of the best players to come out of Maize High. She picks up her first All-Metro nod with a year left.

Ridder finished 10th at the Class 5A state tournament with a 29-over 171. After a rough first day (an 88), she came back strong with an 83 on day 2.

Ridder was also the Eagles’ regional champion, shooting a 10-over 82 at Cherry Oaks and beating a pair of All-Metro selections.

Madison Slayton - Andover, Sr.

As far as talent goes, Slayton might be the best high school girls golfer in the Wichita area.

Slayton won Andover’s Class 5A regional title at 2-over 72 and was runner-up at state with a 20-over 162. She recovered from a tough 84 on day 1 at state to end her career with four top-three finishes, an individual state title and a team title.

Slayton is signed to play at Wichita State next season.

Britney Wessley - Maize South, Jr.

Wessley, like Ridder, is one of the great girls golfers to come through the City of Maize.

Finishing ninth at the Class 5A state tournament with a two-day score of 28-over 170, Wessley was consistent from start to finish. She finished with 85 strokes both days.

Wessley finished third at the Mavericks’ 5A regional with a score of 13-over 85.

Marie Thomas - Kapaun Mt. Carmel, All-Metro Coach of the Year

In her first season in charge, Thomas took Kapaun higher than some believed possible.

Although the Crusaders placed a player (Garrett) on this year’s All-Metro team, she is only a freshman and finished eighth in her first state tournament.

Kapaun won its Class 5A regional over City League-rival Bishop Carroll by 28 strokes, and finished fourth at state.
