Collegiate captures state championship in 4A girls tennis
They’re back.
The Collegiate Spartans won their 10th straight girls tennis team state championship Sunday in Topeka. Their top doubles team of seniors Hannah Geoffroy/Sydney Lair won its second straight title.
Collegiate captured 49 team points, beating the likes of Topeka-Hayden (33 points) and Independence and Wellington (21 points).
Geoffroy/Lair defeated Wellington junior Kylie Aufdengarten/sophomore Rylee Rusk 7-5, 6-1. They lost three games through the first three matches in the tournament.
Aufdengarten/Rusk provided the seniors a challenge they hadn’t seen since the doubles final at the Wichita Collegiate Tournament Champions in which Geoffroy/Lair suffered their only loss of the season to eventual Class 6A champions Callie Flanagan/Christine O’Brien of Blue Valley North.
Collegiate senior Lauren Conrad finished runner-up and reached the 4A championship match after beating Marysville senior Shelby Doward 6-1, 6-3. She lost in the final to four-time state champion Brooklyn Hunter of Topeka-Hayden.
Conrad finished fourth at state in 2017.
The Spartans qualified all six of their potential spots, including senior Riley Ruffin, who finished ninth at state and juniors Sallie Lair/Steph Gentile, who earned a fifth-place finish after losing in the quarterfinals.
Collegiate is the winningest girls tennis program in Kansas history, and the Spartans only added to that tradition Sunday.
