Wichita Sports Hall of Fame announces 14 inductees in 2018 class

The employees at the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame are going to have to make room for more inductees.

On Thursday, 14 members were announced to the hall’s 2018 class, including Wichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall. The induction ceremony is at 2 p.m. April 21 at Hillside Christian Church.

Here is this year’s class:

Bill Faflick

A former City League athletic director, Faflick is the executive director-elect of the Kansas State High School Activities Association. He was part of the Wichita School District for more than 30 years, including serving as the Southeast athletic director from 1995-99. He is a member of the Southeast Hall of Fame.

Bill and Shirley Hall

The Halls made their mark on the dirt. They were owners and operators of 81 Speedway, a dirt race track in north Wichita. They took over the operation in 1963. Bill worked worked at the speedway until his death in 2006, and Shirley did until her death in 2009.

Gregg Marshall

The coach of the Wichita State men’s basketball program has led teams to the NCAA Tournament 13 times in 19 seasons, including a Final Four berth with WSU in 2013. Marshall has 462 career wins and 268 at Wichita State, making him the winningest coach in program history. He was named the Naismith National Coach of the Year in 2014, among many other national coaching accolades.

Dwane Martin

Martin was perhaps the best bowler in Kansas from the 1960s through the ’70s. He won Wichita Bowler of the Year seven times from 1961 to 1978. He was inducted as a member of the Kansas State Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1998.

Paul Miller

As a senior at Wichita State in 2006, Miller helped lead the Shockers to a Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament. He scored 13.1 points per game and grabbed 6.6 rebounds as a senior. He earned several conference accolades at Wichita State before an eight-year international career.

Mike Pelfrey

Pelfrey played for four major league teams during his 12-year baseball career, including the New York Mets and Minnesota Twins. He won 68 games in the majors after dominating at Heights High and Wichita State, where he was inducted into the Shocker Hall of Fame. Pelfrey is a volunteer assistant baseball coach at Newman.

Jessica Smith

Smith scored 128 goals as a soccer player at Southeast, a state record. She went on to play and coach at Kansas. She was named the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior in 2002.

LaVerne Smith

Another Southeast great, Smith was a two-time All-City running back and 100-yard state champion for the Buffaloes. After high school, he continued playing football at KU, where he finished his career as the third-leading rusher in Jayhawk history with 3,192 career yards.

Vic Trilli

Since he was named athletic director at Newman University, Trilli has seen Heartland Conference championships in three sports and sent teams to national tournaments in nine sports. He has led record fundraising efforts at Newman and started the Newman Athletic Club, the Jets’ booster organization.

Steve Woodberry

Woodberry is a two-time state champion basketball player. At South, he scored 828 points under coach Steve Eck. He was named Kansas Naismith Player of the Year in 1990 and went on to play at KU. The Jayhawks made it to two Final Fours while Woodberry was on the roster. He is now an assistant at Wake Forest.

Ted Woodward

Woodward, this year’s media inductee, has been on the radio in Wichita since 1995. He is an alumus of Kapaun Mount Carmel and the University of Notre Dame. Woodward is the public address announcer for Wichita State baseball and volleyball.

2012-13 Wichita State Final Four basketball team

After earning a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Shockers beat Pittsburgh, La Salle, Ohio State and No. 1 seed Gonzaga before losing in the Final Four to Louisville. The Shockers finished with a 30-9 record after winning the Missouri Valley Conference. Cleanthony Early, Carl Hall and Malcolm Armstead helped lead the Shockers through the tournament.

Wichita Swim Club

In its 64th year of operation, the Wichita Swim Club has developed several outstanding swimmers, including two-time gold Olympic gold medalist Jeff Farrell. The club has sent five swimmers to the Olympics and another to the U.S. World Championship team.
