The 10 high school girls teams that defined winning in Wichita in 2024-25

From dynasties to first-timers, girls high school teams in the Wichita metro area delivered some of the most memorable performances of the 2024-25 school year.

This list recognizes the top girls championship teams from schools in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties — programs that not only won state titles, but did so with dominance, resilience or historic impact.

Whether it was Bishop Carroll snapping Wichita’s title drought in soccer, Halstead making history in two different sports or Kapaun, Andover, Andale and Campus continuing their reigns, these 10 teams stood out above the rest.

Here’s a ranking of the most remarkable title runs, plus recognition for the best team that fell just short.

1. Bishop Carroll soccer

In a historic breakthrough, Bishop Carroll ended Kansas City’s two-decade reign over Class 5A by edging St. James Academy 2-1 to claim the program’s first state title. It also marked the first 5A championship for a Wichita-area team since the classification began in 1999. The Golden Eagles also became just the second team in Kansas history to finish with a perfect 21-0 record. Coach Greg Rauch’s squad was led by Leah Henke, Darby Howard, Avery McCorry, Andrea Vielmas, Madeline Weed, Itzelle Lumbreras, Asha Dugan, Rachel Hawkins, Josie Klausmeyer and Lauren Suellentrop.

2. Halstead basketball

Halstead’s run to the Class 3A state championship was one of the most improbable of the school year. The Dragons survived a brutal sub-state, then rallied from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to stun Silver Lake 48-45 in the state final — capturing the school’s first-ever basketball title. Even more impressive: not one player averaged double-digit points. Coach Derek Schutte’s balanced group finished 25-1 and was powered by Piper Schroeder, Addisen Wills, Dalaina Schutte, Bailey Bernal, Jordy Schroeder and Kaci Young.

Five months before the basketball magic, Halstead volleyball made history of its own. The Dragons captured their first state title in school history in dominant fashion, finishing 43-2 and winning the Class 3A championship with straight-set wins over Neodesha and Nemaha Central. Coach Diana Schutte’s team was anchored by Dalaina Schutte, Bailey Bernal, Katharine Engel, Piper Schroeder and Jordy Schroeder.

4. Kapaun Mt. Carmel wrestling

After never cracking the top 10 at state, Kapaun won its first Class 5A championship under new coach Quinton Burgess. The Crusaders edged Basehor-Linwood 157-150 in a thrilling team race, led by individual state champion Courtney Nye. Other key contributors included Gianna Redcorn, Bella Green, Aalyra Arguelles, Olyvia Besco, Taylor Barringer, Ayva Besco, Grace Hare, Isabella Brotemarkle, Caitlyn Bruening and Lizzie O’Malley.

The Trojans kept their dynasty rolling, capturing a fourth straight Class 5A title under coach Steve Alexander. Andover piled up 58 points — nearly a perfect team score — with Molly Gaddis winning singles and Elizabeth Gaddis and Nadia Kaewsai winning doubles. Mia Jaramillo placed third in singles, while Emma Jittawait and Ada Tantemsomboon took second in doubles.

6. Andale track and field

After having their championship streak snapped last year, the Indians reclaimed their spot atop Class 4A, winning their seventh title in the last eight state meets. Coach Tyler Ryan’s team relied on overwhelming depth, scoring 91 points to outpace Eudora’s 67. Standouts included Rylee Meyer, Addy Orth, Emily Struckman, Taya Orth, Hally Horsch, Arwyn Hennessy, Paige Brand, Abbey McNeal, Sydney Waltner, Abbi Winter and Hannah Spexarth.

Led by the same core trio that helped the Trojans win their first title as freshmen, Andover claimed another Class 5-1A crown in dominant fashion. Seniors Mari Griffin, Kiersten Elliott and Sophia Mandanis powered the Trojans to 304 team points under coach Bethany Bastian. Other contributors included Anaya Madden, Hollyn Griffin, Brynn Eilert, Ella Goodman, Alli Zerger, Madey Zerger and Emily Wallace.

9. Campus bowling

Campus continued its dynasty with its eighth title in 11 years, successfully defending the Class 6A crown under first-year coach Brett Marrs. The Colts showed no signs of slowing down — all six bowlers return next season. The roster featured juniors Chante Anderson, Caitlynn Clough, Riley Emerson and Paige Mashak, along with sophomores Angelina Moser and Eloise Rutter.

10. Hesston cross country

In one of the most dramatic finishes of the fall, Hesston edged Wichita Trinity by a single point to win the Class 3A team title — the first cross country championship in school history. Led by top-15 finishes from Reese Quinn, Avery Larson and Ashley Lehman, the Swathers totaled 104 points to top Trinity (105) and Southeast of Saline (109). Nealee Johnston coached the breakthrough.

Other state champions: Andale bowling, Bishop Carroll bowling, Collegiate tennis, Remington cross country.
