Carroll, Kapaun decide to play fall sports despite USD 259’s decision to cancel
Two members of the Wichita City League will continue playing fall sports.
Thursday night, Wichita USD 259 Board of Education voted 5-2 to place the district in the Orange criteria set forth by the Kansas Department of Education, thus canceling all fall activities for Wichita Public Schools (WPS).
Because Bishop Carroll and Kapaun Mount Carmel Catholic high schools are not part of the WPS system, City League athletic director J Means said he could not preclude those schools from playing. The Catholic school rivals have decided to leave the historic league behind, though only for the fall, and continue their scheduled activities.
They stated jointly in a Friday afternoon news release that they will continue to monitor the situation throughout the fall sports seasons.
“With a prayerful approach, we have made the decision to move ahead with all athletics for the fall season,” the release stated. “We will be doing so with much caution and several changes from the normal routines.”
Also outlined in their statement:
- Opponents must meet outlined safety standards
- No busing will be supplied by the schools. Parents will be asked to provide transportation
- Each athlete receives two tickets per game, for adults only
- Masks, social distancing and temperature checks are required for all spectators
- Bands, cheer squads and dance teams will perform at halftime of home football games only
- Cheerleading teams will be limited to 16 participants
- Pom teams will not travel to road games
- No tailgating will be allowed
- Concessions is limited to drinks only
