Some Kansas high schools start suspending all summer sports upon COVID-19 spike
At least three more Kansas high schools have reported at least the potential for COVID-19 exposure, and in one case, it is confirmed.
Shawnee Mission East reported two positive cases from its student-athletes, and Haysville-Campus reported “potential exposure,” away from school grounds, according to a release. Andover Central football’s Twitter account tweeted the Andover district has canceled all summer activities in the coming week, “for Andvoer Central students only.”
Campus has suspended all activities until at least July 10 despite an “extremely low” risk of contracting the virus,” the release states.
Shawnee Mission East has suspended activities through at least Monday, according to multiple reports. In a letter to parents, SM East athletic director Debbie Katzfey said the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment will trace the cases and notify those potentially infected.
At a May 1 Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) board of directors meeting, it was voted that activities may begin conditioning practices June 1. As of Friday, there are at least three cases of COVID-19: two at SM East and another at Centre in Lost Springs.
