All-Metro Wrestling: Meet the top Wichita-area boys, and our inaugural girls team

For the first time, the Wichita Eagle presents two All-Metro wrestling teams.

With the introduction of girls high school wrestling in Kansas, here are the top wrestlers at each weight class from Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties from the 2019-20 season.

BOYS

Nick Treaster, Newton, Fr., 106 pounds

Treaster has picked up where his brother Grant, a two-time champion, left off. He went 37-1 in his first high school season.

Treaster won his first state championship with a 3-0 decision over Maize’s Nakaylen Shabazz and beat Kapaun’s Bubba Wright in the Railers’ 5A regional final by a 5-0 decision.

A.B. Stokes, Newton, Fr., 113 pounds

Stokes and Treaster offered a dangerous one-two punch all season, and that carried into the state tournament.

Stokes went 33-15 as a freshman and took fourth at state. He won Newton’s 5A regional by a 9-2 decision over Maize’s Camden Padgett.

Jason Henschel, Goddard, Sr., 120 pounds

A three-time state champion, Henschel had to beat a two-time champion to get his first All-Metro bid.

Henschel beat Newton’s Grant Treaster by a 1-0 decision in the state final. He lost to Treaster 2-1 at Goddard’s 5A regional final. Henschel went 35-7 as a senior.

Hector Serratos, Andale, Jr., 126 pounds

Serratos is the first 4A wrestler to earn an All-Metro bid.

Now a two-time state champion, Serratos beat Winfield’s Braden Ledford, a returning champion, 3-1 in Andale’s regional final and again 5-2 in the state final. He went 33-5 as a junior.

Jerrdon Fisher, Goddard, So., 132 pounds

Now a two-time All-Metro selection, Fisher captured his first individual title in 2020.

Fisher went 23-1 as a sophomore. He took first at Goddard’s 5A regional with a 9-4 decision over Emporia’s Xerarch Tungjaroenkul. He beat Lansing’s Hartwell Taylor 9-1 in the state final.

Matthew Gottschalk, Bishop Carroll, Sr., 138 pounds

Following former Carroll wrestler Brady Bockover onto the All-Metro team, Gottschalk is a City League champion and went 40-8 as a senior.

He took runner-up at the Eagles’ 5A regional to Great Bend’s George Weber and fourth at state after suffering an injury in the third-place match against Blue Valley Southwest’s Ethan Cronk.

Cason Lindsey, Derby, Jr., 145 pounds

They Lindsey house now has two champions. Following his older brother, Cade, Cason beat Dodge City’s Garrett Edwards in back-to-back finals.

First, Lindsey won 1-0 at Derby’s 6A regional. He won by the same score in the state final. He went 39-5 as a junior.

Devin Gomez, Maize, Sr., 152 pounds

Gomez never lost a match at Maize High.

After transferring from Valley Center, Gomez went 76-0, including 26-0 as a senior. He beat Lansing’s Jacob McClain 11-3 in the state final and Goddard’s Jace Fisher 5-2 in the 5A regional final. He is a four-time state qualifier and two-time All-Metro selection.

Cayleb Atkins, Goddard, Jr., 160 pounds

As a junior, facing a rigorous out-of-state schedule, Atkins went 45-3 and won Goddard’s 5A regional with a 3-0 decision over Maize’s Carson Wheeler.

Atkins lost in the state championship match to St. Thomas Aquinas’ Jared Simma, who is pledged to Northern Iowa, by a 4-2 decision.

Duwayne Villalpando, Maize, Sr., 170 pounds

Before heading to Missouri, where he will practice with Blue Valley Southwest’s Seth Nitzel, Villalpando beat Nitzel in the state championship match by a 7-4 decision.

Villalpando went 33-1 as a senior to win his second title. He won the Eagles’ 5A regional with a 10-5 decision over Goddard’s Nolan Craine.

Quentin Saunders, Wichita West, So., 182 pounds

Saunders has lost only one match in his high school career. He went 32-0 as a sophomore and captured his second state championship.

He won his regional and the state final against Derby’s Taidon Wills by a 5-0 decision. He is on his way to going down as the best wrestler in Wichita West history.

Kaden Glass, Goddard, So., 195 pounds

Glass was Goddard’s breakout star in 2020, finishing runner-up at state and third at the Lions’ 5A regional.

Glass went 31-5 as a sophomore and lost to McPherson’s Landon Frantz by a 6-2 decision in the state final. He beat Andover Central’s Brox Wood 13-3 in the third-place regional match.

Jackson Stroud, Wichita North, Sr., 220 pounds

Stroud is Wichita North’s first individual state champion in 30 years.

He beat Blue Valley’s Trevor Lister in sudden victory to finish his senior season 34-1. He was also the Redskins’ 6A regional champion with another sudden victory win, this one against Washburn Rural’s Andrew Davis.

Tony Caldwell, Valley Center, Sr., 285 pounds

In his third state championship bout of his career, Caldwell won his first and only individual title with a 7-3 decision against Arkansas City’s Maximus Shannon.

Caldwell is Valley Center’s first individual champ in a decade, and he was runner-up at the Hornets’ 5A regional. He finished his senior season 40-4.

Girls

Eleanor Breen, Wichita Southeast, Sr., 101 pounds

Breen won the first individual City League championship in history and the first match at the inaugural state tournament.

With a 28-7 record as a senior, Breen took sixth at the western regional and earned a pin at state before dropping out.

Dialeen French, Wichita North, Jr., 109 pounds

French was named the Co-City League Wrestler of the Year.

She helped Wichita North to a team GWAL championship by winning her bracket with a 7-3 decision over Wichita West’s Ryasia McDougle. She went 18-4 as a junior and was one win away from state.

Anayka Besco, Rose Hill, Sr., 116 pounds

Besco had one of the most exciting state tournaments of anyone in the inaugural event.

She lost her opening bout in the quarterfinal stage, a massive upset. But she battled back to take third. She also finished runner-up at the western regional to nationally ranked wrestler Nichole Moore of Nickerson. She went 17-9 as a senior.

Benji Rodah, Wichita North, Fr., 123 pounds

A City League champion as an individual, Rodah was key to Wichita North’s team GWAL title in the sport’s first year of existence.

Rodah finished her freshman season 15-6 and beat Wichita Northwest’s Liliana Gallegos by pin in the City League final.

Olivia McNeal, Campus, Sr., 130 pounds

McNeal finished her high school career with a 15-4 record in her first official wrestling season.

McNeal took third at the western regional and earned a pin at the state tournament before dropping out.

Xara Bacci, Andover Central, So., 136 pounds

Bacci was one of the pound-for-pound top female wrestlers in the Wichita area this season.

She won the western regional by pin over Valley Center’s Cheyenne Blackwood and finished runner-up at state to KC Piper’s undefeated star Sara Lake. Bacci went 29-4 as a sophomore.

Kammie Schanz, Mulvane, Fr., 143 pounds

Schanz was inches away from a state championship in her first high school wrestling season.

She nearly pinned Pratt’s Livia Swift in the final but ultimately lost 3-2. Her losses to Swift in regionals and state were two of her three losses all season; she finished 30-3.

Marissa Murray, Wichita South, Fr., 155 pounds

Murray had an outstanding regional tournament, coming in runner-up to nationally ranked wrestler Morgan Mayginnes of Onaga.

It was her only loss before coming to state, where she was forced out because of injury. She finished her freshman season 22-3.

Grace Timmons, Valley Center, Fr., 170 pounds

Timmons joins boys’ heavyweight selection Tony Caldwell as the only wrestlers from Valley Center to make the All-Metro wrestling teams.

She finished fourth at the western regional to qualify for state. She lost in the opening round but battled back to place sixth and go 17-8 on the season.

Payton Sholander, Douglass, Fr., 191 pounds

Sholander was one of the great small-classification wrestlers in the Wichita area.

She finished third at the western regional and won the third-place match by pin. She finished her first high school season with a 31-5 record.

Kimberly Vazquez, Wichita South, So., 235 pounds

Vazquez finished sixth at the girls western regional in McPherson and qualified for state.

She and teammate Marissa Murray are the only South Titans to make this year’s All-Metro wrestling teams. She finished her sophomore season with a 12-7 record.
