Eagle columnist Bob Lutz was named Sportswriter of the Year in Kansas for the third time Monday.

Lutz, the Eagle’s sports columnist since 1996, was awarded the honor by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

University of Kansas radio voice Bob Davis was named Kansas Sportscaster of the Year for the 14th time. He has announced his retirement after this season.

Lutz, 60, has been a member of The Eagle’s Sports staff since 1974. He previously covered high school sports, Wichita State and minor-league baseball, and also spent time on The Eagle’s police beat.

Away from work, Lutz is the founder of League 42, a non-profit baseball league that teaches the game to children who haven’t been introduced to it before.
