Wingnuts strike early, beat Saltdogs 5-2
Five consecutive batters reached base in the second inning, paving the way to four runs that set up the Wingnuts’ 5-2 win over Lincoln on Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Matt Chavez started the rally with a one-out walk. Brent Dean had the big hit, a two-run double. Brennen Salgado (single) and Christian Stringer (fielder’s choice) also knocked in runs in the inning.
The Saltdogs nicked Wingnuts starter Chris Boshers for single runs in the third and fourth innings, but couldn’t do further damage.
T.J. Mittelstaedt led off the eighth inning with a homer off Lincoln reliever Ryan Davis for Wichita’s final run.
The Wingnuts had lost four of their previous six games. Wichita is in first place in the American Association South Division; Lincoln leads the Central Division.
The teams wrap up the series Wednesday. It’s the Wingnuts’ last home game until Aug. 16.
