Wingnuts explode in late innings, win seventh straight
The Wingnuts erupted for two runs in the seventh and five in the eighth on the way to an 8-2 win over Gary-Southshore on Thursday night in Gary, Ind., for the Wingnuts’ seventh straight win.
Stormy weather delayed the start of the game nearly 90 minutes. The Wingnuts took a quick 1-0 lead when T.J. Mittelstaedt singled to drive in Brent Clevlen, but the offense went stagnant from there, generating just five hits off RailCats starter Conrad Wozniak.
Former Maize standout Garrett Gould, making his second appearance with the Wingnuts, started and threw two scoreless innings. Jess Pratt took over to start the third, and allowed two runs in the fourth.
Wichita took a 3-2 lead in the seventh, scoring runs on a single by Zack Cox and a sacrifice fly by Matt Chavez. Cox added two more RBIs during the five-run eighth.
