Wingnuts rout Lemurs 14-5
The Wingnuts pounded out a season-high 19 hits and beat Laredo 14-5 on Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium to wrap up a four-game series.
T.J. Mittelstaedt and Leo Vargas had four hits apiece. Mittelstaedt drove in four runs and Vargas and Zack Cox each scored three.
After the Lemurs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Cox hit a three-run homer to cap the Wingnuts’ four-run second inning. Mittelstaedt added a two-run homer in the fourth as Wichita’s lead grew to 7-2, and Vargas hit a two-run single in the fifth to make it 9-2.
Laredo scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, cutting the deficit to five, then Cox, Brent Clevlen and Mittelstaedt hit consecutive doubles during a five-run seventh inning that put Wichita ahead 14-4.
The Wingnuts’ homestand continues this weekend against Gary-Southshore.
