Wingnuts lose another game to Lemurs
Matt Sergey and two relievers combined on a five-hitter as host Laredo defeated Wichita 4-1 on Thursday night to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series American Association playoff series.
The loss leaves the Wingnuts on the brink of elimination in the series. The third game in the series will be played in Wichita on Saturday night, with games Sunday and Monday in Wichita can remain alive.
Sergey went six innings, allowing two hits and no runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven. Luis De La Cruz went 1 1/3 innings, yielding two hits and a run. John Brebbia earned a save, going 1 2/3 and giving up one hit.
The Wingnuts averted a shutout when Nick Van Stratten singled in Harrison Kain in the eighth. Kain hit a one-out single earlier in the inning. But by that point the Wingnuts trailed 4-1.
The Lemers struck for a run in the second when Denis Phipps hit a leadoff single against Wingnuts starter Jon Link, moved to second on J.D. Pulfer’s single, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Drew Martinez’ infield groundout.
Phipps scored an unearned in the sixth. He reached on a two-out single and went to second on a throwing error by T.J. Mittelstaedt, then scored on Travis Denker’s single.
The Lemurs pieced together two more runs in the seventh inning on three hits.
The start of the game was delayed more than an hour by rain.
