Wingnuts fall in 11 innings
Wingnuts relief pitcher Daniel Bennett didn’t do anything wrong Friday, but he was still the losing pitcher in a 3-2, 11-inning loss to the Capitales in Quebec City, Quebec, in the final chapter of a 14-game road trip.
The American Association used international rules for extra inning games. If the score is tied after the 10th inning, each team starts the 11th with a runner on second base. The Wingnuts failed to score their runner in the top of the inning, then the Capitales moved their run home with a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly against Bennett.
Wichita starter Scott Richmond held Quebec to two runs in seven innings but the second was painful — Will Walsh hit a one-out double in the sixth, then scored on consecutive wild pitches.
The Wingnuts tied the score in the seventh. Matt Padgett led off with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. T.J. Mittelstaedt’s single drove in Padgett, and Brent Dean’s two-out double scored Mittelstaedt.
The Wingnuts are off Saturday and return home Sunday to face the Joplin Blasters.
