Wichita Wingnuts

Wingnuts win opener in Ottawa

Some clutch two-out hitting made winners out of the Wingnuts – and an unusual addition – in Canada on Saturday night.

Wichita scored all four of its sixth-inning runs with two outs to defeat the Ottawa Champions 4-2 in an American Association-Can-Am League interleague game.

Josh Nester singled and Joash Brodin walked to start the sixth-inning rally, but the real action started with two outs.

Jerry Gonzalez singled to drive in Nester, and Leo Vargas singled to bring in Brodin. After Vargas stole second, Jayce Ray’s single brought in Gonzalez and Vargas for a 4-1 lead.

The Wingnuts’ winning pitcher had maybe never heard of the Wingnuts before this week. Eddie Medina was picked up by the team on its East Coast swing. The former St. John’s reliever is a New York native and was recruited to the club during the trip.

Medina made Saturday’s start and pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and an unearned run. He had previously pitched for the York Revolution of the Atlantic League.
