Wingnuts let another lead slip away
The Wingnuts bullpen failed to protect a ninth-inning lead for the second time in three nights, allowing three runs to score in a 4-3 loss to the Canaries on Wednesday night in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Daniel Carela started the ninth by allowing a double to David Bergin. Bergin moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored when the next pitch was also wild, making the score 3-2. Richard Stock drew a walk from Carela, then the Wingnuts brought in Daniel Bennett. Sioux Falls’ R.J. Perucki beat out a bunt for a single, then Bennett committed an error fielding Vickash Ramjit’s bunt, loading the bases. A wild pitch by Bennett allowed the tying run to score, and after an intentional walk to Tyler Shover loaded the bases, Harrison Kain hit a game-ending sacrifice fly.
The ninth-inning meltdown wiped out eight innings of solid pitching. Starter Tim Brown went six innings, allowing four hits and a first-inning run. Frankie Reed and Al Yevoli each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
The Wingnuts got a run in the fourth when Joash Brodin’s two-out double drove in Matt Padgett from first. They went ahead 3-1 in the fifth. Tyler Coughenour hit a one-out triple, then scored on a single by Leo Vargas. A two-out double by T.J. Mittelsteadt knocked in Vargas.
The Canaries scored two in the bottom of the ninth Monday to beat the Wingnuts 4-3.
