Joplin Blasters beat Wingnuts 5-2 in American Association debut

The Joplin Blasters beat the Wingnuts 5-2 on opening night in the American Association on Thursday in Joplin, Mo.

The Blasters took a 1-0 lead in third, then added two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth against Wingnuts starter Anthony Capra. Capra struck out six in 4 2/3 innings but allowed nine hits.

The Wingnuts made it 5-2 on David Espinosa’s two-run homer in the seventh. Wichita got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh before Tyler Coughnour popped out, and had two on with one out in the eighth but Dustin Geiger flew out and Espinosa grounded into a force out to end the threat. Joplin reliever Winston Abreu struck out the side in the ninth.

The game was the Blasters’ American Association debut and the first regular-season game played at refurbished Becker Stadium, a 2,400-seat facility, that once was home for Mickey Mantle.
