Wingnuts win first game of playoff series

Danny Gutierrez pitched seven shutout innings, leading the Winguts to a 4-2 victory over Gary SouthShore in the first game of the American Association playoffs Wednesday night in Gary, Ind.

Gutierrez limited the Railcats to two hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven. Mike Devine allowed a run in the eighth; Ryan Kussmaul gave up a run in the ninth put the tying runs on base before striking out the final two batters.

Gutierrez, 30, joined the Wingnuts in mid-August after pitching in the Mexican League. He made four starts in the final weeks of the regular season, and never went longer than five innings.

The Wingnuts scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the seventh. Martin Medina and Leo Vargas each had three hits.

The second game of the best-of-5 series is Thursday night. The third game is at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium; if needed, the fourth and fifth games would be Sunday and Monday in Wichita.
