Wingnuts beat Winnipeg again
Matt Nevarez escaped a bases-loaded jam of his own making in the ninth inning, and the Wingnuts beat Winnipeg 6-5 on Friday night in Winnipeg.
Wichita has won the first two games of the four-game set against Winnipeg in a matchup of the top two teams in the American Association.
Nevarez allowed a leadoff single to Jake Blackwood, then Sam Kimmel reached when Nevarez committed an error while field Kimmel’s sacrifice bunt. Both runners moved over on Ryan Pineda’s sacrifice, then Nevarez intentionally walked Brock Bond to load the bases with one out. He ended the drama by striking out the next two batters.
The Wingnuts took the lead in the top of the ninth. David Amberson doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice by Jake Luce, then came home on Ryan Khoury’s single to left.
David Espinosa and Brent Clevlen each hit home runs for Wichita.
