Winnipeg shuts out Wingnuts in opening game of championship series

The Wingnuts’ offense was shut down in the opening game of the American Association championship series as three Winnipeg pitchers held Wichita to four hits in the Goldeyes’ 5-0 win on Wednesday night in Winnipeg.

The second game of the best-of five series is Thursday night in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg starting pitcher Edwin Carl limited the Wingnuts to two baserunners in the first six innings. He departed after 6 2/3 innings with runners on first and second, then reliever Victor Capellan got Harrison Kain to ground into a forceout to end the inning.

Wingnuts starter Tim Brown didn’t walk a batter and struck out six in six innings. He allowed 10 hits.

Carlton Tanabe hit a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the second that put Winnipeg ahead 2-0.

Josh Romanski hit a one-out home run off Brown in the sixth to make it 3-0. The next two batters reached base, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Brown escaped further damage by striking out Wes Darvill then getting Tanabe to pop out.

Romanski hit a two-out single in the seventh off Wingnuts reliever Mike Devine to make it 4-0.

In the eighth, Wingnuts reliever Gage Smith allowed a leadoff walk to Casio Grider, who scored on a two-single by Adam Heisler.

Carl pitched five innings and was the winning pitcher Friday in the second game of the Goldeyes’ series against Saint Paul, then pitched  2/3 of an inning Sunday in Game 4.
