Friday’s NBC World Series Report
Denkinger to hold clinic
Longtime major-league umpire Don Denkinger will hold a free clinic for youth umpires at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Denkinger, who worked major-league games from 1969 to 1998, is best known for an incorrect ninth-inning call that worked in the favor of the Royals in Game 6 of their 1985 World Series championship over the Cardinals.
There is no cost for the clinic and no reservations are needed. Denkinger will also be the guest at a noon luncheon Wednesday at the Wichita Boathouse. Lunch includes a $15 buffet. Reservations can be made by contacting Bob Homolka at umperbob@gmail.com.

Cape Girardeau (Mo.) Capahas 6, Jasper (Ind.) Reds 4 — The first game of the NBC World Series got off to a quick start. The teams combined for four runs in the first inning as Jasper got out to an early 3-1 lead. Then Jasper went quiet at the plate, not scoring again until the ninth inning. Cape Girardeau shortstop Laba Petzoldt was a part of five of the team’s six runs, as he went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs.

Puerto Rico 11, Denver Cougars 3 — Puerto Rico pitcher Marco Blanchard, a left-hander from Arkansas Baptist, tied the wood-bat era strikeout record, striking out 16 batters in eight innings. Blanchard threw 80 of his 108 pitches for strikes.
Puerto Rico slammed Denver with 13 hits. After getting up 8-2 through five innings, Puerto Rico ended the game with three runs in the eighth, including a two-RBI single from shortstop Abdiel Alicea to close out the game.
Al LaMacchia holds the NBC record with 20 strikeouts in 1943.

Park City Rangers 10, Oklahoma Giants 8 — Park City scored three unearned runs in the third inning after Oklahoma started the inning with an error. That gave Park City a 4-3.
Oklahoma scored in five of the first seven innings and led 8-7 heading to the eighth. Oklahoma’s Bryant Hodge struck out the first two batters in the eighth, then walked two and gave up a double as Park City rallied.

Wellington Heat 3, Austin Action 2 — Wellington looked as if it would run away early, but Austin pitcher Austin Winkle settled in and Wellington’s situational hitting was lackluster. The Heat got on the board with two runs in the top of the second, then were shut down for the next three innings.
When Austin scored in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single, Wellington answered right back. Matt Heck hit a two-out triple to the right-center fence was followed by a single from Austin Orth to bring the Heat’s lead back to two runs. Austin added a run in the bottom of the seventh, then got a man on second with two outs in the eighth inning, but couldn’t plate the tying run.
