FC Wichita midfielder Shadow Sebele was killed in an automobile accident Friday in San Diego, Sebele’s current team, the San Diego Sockers indoor team, said in a statement. Sebele, 26, was involved in the accident in San Diego’s Old Town district.

Sebele played for the indoor Wichita B-52s before joining the outdoor FC Wichita team in the National Premier Soccer League last summer.

“We are extremely shocked and saddened by this news,” San Diego general manager John Kentera said. “Shadow, was a wonderful man with a huge heart and everyone in the organization loved him.”

Sebele came to the United States from Zimbabwe when he was 15 as part of the Grassroot Soccer program and went to high school in Alexandria, Va. He was an All-Big East selection at West Virginia and played for the Des Moines Menace of the USL Premier Development League and went to camp with the D.C. United in 2014 before being released.

“Today we lost a huge member of our club and our soccer community. Our 1st Captain in club history Shadow Sebele has taken his place next to God,” FC Wichita said on the team’s Facebook account.
