New Orleans Hornets leading scorer David West has a torn left knee ligament and is out for the season. West was injured Thursday night in the Hornets' 121-117 overtime win at Utah. He scored 29 points in the game before being taken off in a wheelchair after going down hard after a dunk that tied the game at 103 with 22.5 seconds left in regulation.

* Dwyane Wade scored 39 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the Miami Heat went on two huge scoring runs to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 111-99. The Heat had a 23-2 run in the second quarter to erase what was a 16-point deficit, then put it away with a 24-5 burst in the fourth.... Dante Cunningham hit a go-ahead 15-foot jumper with 34 seconds left and the Charlotte Bobcats erased a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the struggling Celtics 83-81 in Boston. The Celtics lost for the sixth time in 10 games.... Dwight Howard had 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Hedo Turkoglu added 20 points and 13 assists to lead Orlando past New Jersey 95-85.... Brandon Jennings scored a season-high 37 points to help Milwaukee send New York to its fifth consecutive loss, 102-96.

* Lucas McDonald was hired as Dodge City's women's coach. McDonald was a Dodge City assistant from 2001-04. He most recently coached Alabama high school girls basketball and replaces Steve High, who resigned.

* Washburn's Logan Stutz scored 11 points and Fort Hays State's Dominique Jones had eight for the West team in the Reese's All-Star game, a matchup of NCAA Division II players sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Golf

Wichita State is tied for sixth after two rounds of the 19-team Border Olympics in Houston. WSU shot 5-under 571 and trails leaders Arkansas and Oklahoma by 18 shots. Kansas (581) is 12th and Kansas State (582) is 13th. WSU sophomore Rafael Becker is tied for ninth individually at 5-under 139, and fellow sophomore Hunter Sparks is at 140.

* Martin Laird reached three par 5s in two shots, converted one of them into an eagle and shot a 7-under 65 for a 135 total and a one-shot lead over K.J. Choi and Spencer Levin in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando, Fla. Choi shot a tournament-best 64. Tiger Woods raised his arm on the ninth green as his 20-foot birdie putt rolled in for a 4-under 68, leaving him six shots behind going into the weekend.

Motorsports

After a series of so-so qualifying runs the first four weeks of the season, Juan Pablo Montoya hit 184.653 mph on the 2-mile oval at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif, earning the pole for Sunday's race. Montoya has two top-10 finishes, including a third at Las Vegas. A series of storms, including one that lasted into Friday morning, pushed practice back two hours and trimmed it down to about 45 minutes. Kyle Busch blamed a wet spot for his wreck on his first lap. Busch qualified eighth in his backup car.

Tennis

The three-time Grand Slam runnerup Andy Murray lost in his opening match at the Sony Ericsson Open to American qualifier Alex Bogomolov Jr., 6-1, 7-5. The Scotsman hasn't won a set in three matches since he was routed in the Australian Open final by Novak Djokovic. In other men's play, Americans Mardy Fish and James Blake reached the third round.

Defending women's champion Kim Clijsters needed only 50 minutes to win her opening match, beating qualifier Anastasiya Yakimova 6-1, 6-1.

Hockey

Roberto Luongo stopped 30 shots and Vancouver set franchise records for road wins and points in a season, beating Atlanta 3-1. The Canucks have won nine of 10, earned their 24th road win and have 107 points. They have won seven straight road games.... James Neal scored in the third round of a shootout and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New Jersey Devils 1-0. The Penguins moved within two points of idle Philadelphia in the race for both the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference leads.... Craig Anderson made 31 saves for his second shutout as Ottawa beat Washington 2-0.

Baseball

Former slugger Mike Sweeney signed a one-day minor league contract with Kansas City so he could retire as a member of the Royals.

"I'm walking away with no regrets," Sweeney said during a ceremony near a field at the Royals' spring training complex, with team officials and minor-league players in attendance.

The 37-year-old Sweeney was a five-time All-Star with the Royals. He played for Kansas City from 1995-2007 and spent his last three seasons with Oakland, Seattle and Philadelphia.

Sweeney finished with a .297 average, 215 home runs and 909 RBIs. His final at-bat came in the only postseason plate appearance of his career, and he singled last October for the Phillies.

* San Diego Padres pitcher Mat Latos has a sore right shoulder, putting a potential opening-day start against St. Louis in jeopardy. Latos said his shoulder had improved, but he won't make his next scheduled spring training start today. He was 14-10 with a 2.92 ERA in a career-high 31 starts last season and finished tied for eighth in NL Cy Young Award voting.

* The Cincinnati Reds took another hit to their starting rotation on Friday, losing right-hander Homer Bailey because of a shoulder problem. Tests found he has some limited movement, forcing him to rest for a week. He'll open the season on the disabled list along with right-handed starter Johnny Cueto, who has mild inflammation in his shoulder. The defending NL Central champions also are unsure of starter Bronson Arroyo, who has been sick for nearly two weeks and was tested for a fungal infection in his lungs.

* Right-hander Kevin Millwood agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Yankees. Millwood would get a $1.5 million, one-year contract if added to the 40-man roster. He would have the chance to earn $3.5 million more in performance bonuses. Millwood is 159-137 with a 4.11 ERA in 14 big league seasons.

Soccer

Chad Ochocinco's soccer career has been extended at least two days. Sporting Kansas City has asked the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver to play in their reserve team's game on Monday. Ochocinco began a four-day trial with the MLS team on Wednesday.
