England survived an upset bid from Congo in a Round of 32 match on Wednesday, winning 2-1 — so that means the English team will continue to reside in Prairie Village and practice at Swope Soccer Village during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
That’ll result in more soccer in KC for the players ... and perhaps more golf.
A number of England’s players enjoy hitting the links and have done so here, as forward Ollie Watkins told the BBC.
While at a local golf course, Watkins met Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. And former Patriots/Buccaneers star Tom Brady, who was in town recently, also visited the team.
“I met Patrick Mahomes yesterday. Cool guy,” Watkins said in a BBC interview shared Tuesday. "Tom Brady came into the camp, so a lot of cool faces around. Tom Brady, I think he came in to see Harry Kane. They’re having a chat, and then I just briefly met him. Nice guy.
“And then at the golf course yesterday, Patrick Mahomes was doing a photo shoot up there, and he said he wanted to meet us. Yeah, I was playing with Traff (goalkeeper James Trafford), and we went and spoke to him for a good 10 minutes.”
Watkins admitted he likes one NFL stadium. It’s not Arrowhead, but AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
“I think that’s my favorite, and he was just saying he started off there (in Texas), and yeah, telling me about his journey as well,” Watkins said. “I’ve got a Mahomes jersey as well.”
While not a big football fan (the American kind, anyway), Watkins did know of Mahomes, who has a worldwide following. And Mahomes shared some insights on being a professional athlete during their chat.
Watkins appreciated the conversation
“I wasn’t like starstruck or something like a lot of my mates would have been if they met him,” Watkins said. “But yeah, it’s just nice when you meet other athletes, just to kind of pick their brains and talk about how they train and how they live their life.”
