Ex-Chiefs player shares behind-the-scenes story of Andy Reid at Super Bowl LIV
The Chiefs broke a 50-year drought by winning Super Bowl LIV, but they didn’t get to bask in the glow of that title for long.
Weeks after the Chiefs’ rallied for a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Miami Gardens, Florida, the COVID pandemic hit. As a result, the Chiefs’ championship wasn’t fully celebrated, even though there was a parade and rally.
However, the Chiefs got to soak it all in a couple more times, after they won Super Bowls LVII and LVIII.
That first title in the Chiefs’ dynasty was sweet for fans, many of whom thought they’d never see the team even make the Super Bowl.
Mitchell Schwartz was the Chiefs’ right tackle on that team. While conversing with fans on X, he was asked for a good story following the Super Bowl LIV win, preferably about coach Andy Reid.
Schwartz complied.
“He’s usually the last one on the bus and then we go,” Schwartz wrote. “We were all celebrating, and then when he got on it got quiet. And as he was facing us, he pulled the Lombardi Trophy from behind his back and the bus went nuts. He’s the best.”
Fortunately, there is video. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had shared that moment on his Instagram story, and the players did lose it when the Lombardi Trophy appeared.
