Jason Kelce’s advice for the Eagles is precisely what Chiefs fans want from Andy Reid

- Kelce highlights Eagles’ reliance on A.J. Brown slants and predictable offense
Getting to the Super Bowl is incredibly difficult for any NFL team, which makes the Chiefs’ recent run all the more amazing.
The Chiefs went to the Super Bowl five times in a six-year span, including three in a row, and won a trio of Lombardi Trophies.
Just ask the Eagles about all the things that can go wrong in a season as the defending Super Bowl champions. Philadelphia won the NFC East, but they were the only team in the division with a winning record.
It’s not easy getting back to the big game.
And the Eagles’ season ended Sunday with a home loss to the 49ers in an NFC Wild Card Game.
Former Eagles center Jason Kelce broke down what he thinks went wrong and offered a suggestion for moving forward. Philadelphia removed Kevin Patullo as offensive coordinator, and Kelce said the team needs some fresh new ideas.
Many KC fans think the same is true for the Chiefs and Andy Reid, whether or not offensive coordinator Matt Nagy gets a head coaching job. A fresh perspective could help Reid going forward, fans say.
“I think sometimes it’s when you have success as a group, and you have success as an offense, you tend to rely on that,” Kelce said on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast. “A.J. Brown on a slant route has been automatic for four years. It doesn’t matter what you do, you can’t stop it. He’s too big. He’s too physical. This year, all that stuff just didn’t work as well.
“It would probably behoove the Eagles to bring in somebody with a fresh perspective on where it’s at currently. Because when you’re in it, you’re thinking about what you’ve done well in the past, you’re thinking about how you’ve had success. It’s like, ‘Man, I know this guy can do this.’ Yeah, when you bring in somebody else, it’s like, ‘Man, this is where we’re at now. And now we can bring in some fresh ideas. We can figure out a way to maximize things.’”
From the outside, it seemed the Chiefs suffered from the same problems Kelce mentioned. Players who had been successful in the past fell off this season for the Chiefs, whose offense looked stagnant at times even before quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ season-ending knee injury.
If Nagy leaves the Chiefs, would Reid hire someone who can take a fresh look at the offense and offer new ideas? Fans hope so.
Kelce wants that in Philly, too, and explained why it’s a good thing.
“I don’t think it needs to be anything actually that drastic,” Kelce said. “I think we probably want somebody who’s been proven offensively, who is a successful coach, and he can come in and look at things under a new lens with a lot of similar pieces.”
Alex Smith weighs in
Former Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith was on the “Up & Adams Show” this week and said he believes Mike Kafka might be the leading candidate to be KC’s new offensive coordinator should Nagy leave.
Kafka, who was the Giants’ offensive coordinator under head coach Brian Daboll for nearly four seasons, previously spent five seasons on Reid’s staff. The final two years were as the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
“Andy just rarely brings somebody outside of his circle,” Reid. “I don’t think it’s a bad thing if he did bring somebody without (prior time in KC), but I think in some ways, Kafka fits that so perfectly, right? He just spent, what, four or five years with Daboll, that system, I think. But obviously, he knows this Chiefs’ system so well. I think he could bring in some outside ideas.
“I know some people are frustrated with the offense, certainly, and it’s like, well, Nagy, but listen, Andy’s doing the offense. We all know this. And Andy knows it, right? So it’s like a little bit of it’s when you’re the offensive coordinator there, you only have so much input.”
