Chiefs provide 3 personnel updates, including on Josh Simmons’ potential return
AI-generated summary reviewed by our newsroom.
- Chiefs expect rookie Josh Simmons to rejoin practice as staff assesses readiness.
- Jaylon Moore started four games at left tackle and kept the line serviceable.
- Isiah Pacheco remains doubtful with a sprained MCL; Jawaan Taylor progresses.
Kansas City Chiefs rookie left tackle Josh Simmons returned to the team facility last week after a four-game absence for what the team described as a family matter.
Kansas City will be back at practice Wednesday ahead of its Week 11 AFC West matchup against the Denver Broncos, and the expectation is that Simmons will be among those back on the field.
“I think what we’ll do is just see where we’re at here,” head coach Andy Reid said of Simmons. “We know we’ve got a good player in there now, and we know what Josh is capable of and all that, so we’ll just see where we’re at when they get back.”
As Reid noted, in Simmons’ absence, veteran lineman Jaylon Moore started at left tackle against the Detroit Lions, Las Vegas Raiders, Washington Commanders and Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs won the first three games before falling in the Week 9 matchup against Buffalo.
“Jaylon’s done a nice job for us,” Reid said. “I think asking him to jump in after the season’s been going for a couple months is a tough ask — especially against the D-lines we’re playing — but he’s done a respectable job.”
Reid said he expected Simmons’ teammates will welcome him back with open arms.
“Players always are concerned about other players’ well-being — that’s first of all,” Reid said. “They also move forward, and they don’t necessarily look back. They giddy up and go on what’s there today — and let’s go — and they go a hundred miles an hour with that. So I think it’s a blend of things: They’re not dwelling on that, but they want to make sure he’s OK as a human being.”
The Broncos feature right outside linebacker Nik Bonitto — who currently ranks third in the NFL with 9.5 sacks. Having Simmons back in the fold could help meet that challenge.
Other Chiefs updates
Running back Isiah Pacheco has missed the last two games with a sprained MCL, and right tackle Jawaan Taylor left the Week 9 loss to Buffalo with an ankle injury.
Reid’s Monday update indicated that Taylor appears ahead of Pacheco in his recovery.
“Well, I’ll have to see on (Pacheco),” Reid said. “Taylor was feeling pretty good by the time he got back here and had left, so I think we’ll probably be OK there.”
