Ex-Chiefs star Tyrann Mathieu reveals what he said to Tom Brady at Super Bowl LV
Most Chiefs fans have purged Super Bowl LV from their memory banks, and for good reason.
Penalties, poor offensive line play and dropped passes all led to the Chiefs losing 31-9 to the Buccaneers. As the game unraveled for the Chiefs, things got heated at times.
Former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu last week discussed when he and former Bucs quarterback Tom Brady got into it.
When talking with the NFL Network’s Rich Eisen, Mathieu was asked about that encounter. Mathieu said it was the most intense game he’s ever played in as he faced off against Bucs coach Bruce Arians. Mathieu had known many of Tampa Bay’s assistants when he was with the Arizona Cardinals and Arians coached there.
“I thought Tampa Bay played well that day, obviously,” Mathieu said. “But yeah, man, they did their scouting report on me. I think Bruce Arians and all them kind of, you know, I think my weaknesses was definitely shared before that game, because they was on me. They was on me that day.”
Eisen showed a photo of Brady and Mathieu, who retired from the NFL last month, getting up close and personal. Could Mathieu share what was said? Mic’d-up video that day didn’t include the heated exchange.
“I think if I’m not mistaken, I think this play right here is ... it was going to fourth down, and I think I was telling Tom to get off the field,” Mathieu said. “And Tom was like, ‘No, nah.’ So, yeah, that was an intense stare-off, for sure.”
