One of the first questions for Chiefs coach Andy Reid on the opening night of the NFL Draft was whether first-round pick Josh Simmons would be ready for training camp.

It was Reid’s expectation that Simmons, an offensive tackle who suffered a patellar tendon injury last season at Ohio State, would participate at camp in St. Joseph.

There is no reason to believe that assumption has changed.

Following the Chiefs’ Organized Team Activities workout Thursday ahead of next week’s mandatory minicamp, Reid provided a positive update on Simmons.

“You know what, he’s doing a nice job,” Reid said. “We weren’t sure quite how much we were gonna get out of him. He looks strong. He’s been jumping in and taking team reps out, which he was just doing the individual stuff before. You can definitely see the talent. He’s got to keep learning, and learning stuff that Andy (Heck, offensive line coach) is teaching him, fundamentally, technique wise. But he sure has a good attitude.”

Simmons is so eager to get going that the Chiefs actually have been asking him to take things a little slower.

That apparently is not the style for the 6-foot-5, 310-pound Simmons.

“We’ve done that with him and he’s asked for more,” Reid said. “We’ve kind of kept backing him up here and easing him into it. You can tell that the rehabbed (and) did a nice job with it. Obviously, the surgeon did a nice job with it, and he’s in good shape. He’s here quite a bit. He’s one of those guys you’ve got to kick out of the building.”
