Chiefs chasing Super Bowl three-peat glory, plus these notable individual achievements
The Super Bowl three-peat is the biggest carrot, but beyond the Chiefs winning a third straight Lombardi Trophy on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, there are plenty of spots in the NFL record book to chase for the Chiefs.
Some will be achieved by just playing in the game.
In Super Bowl history, only three have players have participated in at least six games, led by Tom Brady with an amazing 10.
Six Chiefs can add their name to the list of those who have played in five Super Bowls: quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, defensive tackle Chris Jones, placekicker Harrison Butker, long-snapper James Winchester and offensive lineman Joe Thuney.
Thuney will have played in three for the Chiefs and two for the New England Patriots. He missed last year’s Super Bowl with an injury.
And the following Chiefs players have a chance to become the first to start three straight Super Bowl victories for the same team: Mahomes, Kelce, Jones, running back Isiah Pacheco, linebacker Nick Bolton, cornerback Trent McDuffie, safety Justin Reid and tight end Noah Gray.
Linebacker Ken Norton Jr. started in three straight Super Bowl wins, two for the Dallas Cowboys and one for the San Francisco 49ers (1992-94).
Individual glory ...
Here are three players will records on the line:
- Mahomes will join John Elway with five Super Bowl starts at quarterback, trailing only Brady. He also is second in career playoff passer rating at 105.8, behind Baker Mayfield’s 105.9. Or how about this one? Mahomes is the career leader in playoff (11) and Super Bowl (four) fumble recoveries, all but one his own.
- Kelce tops the NFL with 174 playoff receptions, with 31 in Super Bowls. He needs two on Sunday to catch Jerry Rice as the career leader. Kelce has at least two catches in all 24 of his playoff games. His 20 playoff touchdown receptions also trail Rice by two. And ... Kelce will start his 25th playoff game Sunday. Only Brady (48), Rice (29) and Peyton Manning (27) will have started more.
- Butker’s nine field goals are the most in Super Bowl history. He’ll need a few more playoff seasons to catch Adam Vinatieri’s 56 playoff field goals. Butker has 36.
Team achievements ...
The Chiefs can become the second team to win four Super Bowls in six seasons. The Pittsburgh Steelers were the first from 1974-79.
Starting in 2015, the Chiefs have compiled 141 victories, tied with the Patriots (2010-19) for most in 10-year span. With a victory Sunday, the Chiefs will hold NFL records for victories in spans of nine and 10 years. They already hold the records in three- to eight year periods.
A victory would be No. 18 on the season, matching the 1984 Niners, 1985 Bears and 2007 Patriots. The Eagles, who went 14-3 in the regular season and are 3-0 in the playoffs, also have this opportunity.
The Chiefs could tie an NFL record for consecutive playoff victories, too, at 10. The Patriots won 10 from 2001-05, but the Chiefs would be the first to accomplish the streak in three seasons.
