Chiefs’ Jones asked if he should be NFL’s top-paid pass-rusher. Here’s what he said

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones became the questioner during part of his media-day obligations Wednesday ahead of Super Bowl LVII.

While speaking at a raised podium at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale, Jones was asked by a reporter, “Do you think you deserve to be the highest-paid pass-rusher in football?”

Jones’ chuckled before responding: “Do you think I deserve to be the highest-paid pass-rusher in football?”

The reporter played along, saying, “I do, but my opinion doesn’t matter.”

“Yeah, mine doesn’t either,” Jones said with a laugh.

Jones, 28, is under contract with the Chiefs through the 2023 season, though this could be an offseason in which he seeks an extension with the team. He had a career year this season, posting 15 1/2 sacks and emerging as one of three finalists for the Associated Press NFL defensive player of the year award.

On Wednesday, Jones was asked whether he believed the Chiefs would talk to him in the coming months about redoing his contract.

“I never really worry about that,” Jones said. “I’ve got agents for it. It’ll eventually work itself out.”

Jones spent his time with reporters wearing Louis Vuitton sunglasses that he said he borrowed from teammate Mike Danna. That’s because Jones said he “got sick up here all of a sudden,” conveying he had a sore throat, runny nose and runny eyes.

At one point, when discussing his symptoms, Jones said “my allergies are messing up.”

“Yesterday, last night, I was amazing. I was on cloud nine,” Jones said. “Today, I’m a little ‘eh.’ But I’m OK.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday morning that everyone was slated to practice. Jones, to confirm, said he’d be fine to play on Sunday.

He also told reporters Wednesday that he’d had a “crazy dream” about the Super Bowl the previous night.

When asked what it was, Jones grinned.

“I can’t tell you,” Jones said. “They told me if you tell your dream, it’ll never come true.”
