KC Chiefs’ Clyde Edwards-Helaire officially active vs. Bills; Williams and Fenton out
The Chiefs are officially getting back one running back but will be missing another for Sunday evening’s AFC Divisional Round playoff game against the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire makes his return to the lineup after missing time with a shoulder injury and projects to resume his role as the featured rusher out of the Chiefs’ backfield.
Edwards-Helaire suffered a shoulder injury in Week 16 and missed the final two regular-season games and the Chiefs’ opening playing win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He put in three full practices in the past week and didn’t carry a game designation on Friday’s injury report.
Darrel Williams, however, is inactive with a toe injury. Williams, who entered the weekend as questionable on Friday’s injury report, suffered the injury in the regular-season finale and played just eight snaps in last weekend’s playoff game. The fourth-year running back didn’t practice Wednesday and Thursday, and was limited Friday.
With Williams inactive, the Chiefs will rely on Jerick McKinnon and Derrick Gore as running backs alongside Edwards-Helaire and fullback Michael Burton.
The Chiefs also declared cornerback Rashad Fenton (back), tackle Prince Tega Wanogho, wide receiver Josh Gordon, rookie defensive end Joshua Kaindoh and rookie quarterback Shane Buechele inactive.
Fenton misses a second straight game, but the Chiefs are covered with cornerbacks Charvarius Ward, L’Jarius Sneed and Mike Hughes in nickel packages. Deandre Baker is also available for playing time if needed.
Wide receiver Daurice Fountain, whom the Chiefs elevated Saturday from the practice squad, is dressed and projects to contribute on special teams.
For the Bills, offensive lineman Bobby Hart, wide receiver/returner Marquez Stevenson, defensive tackle Vernon Butler, tight end Tommy Sweeney, running back Matt Breida, cornerback Nick McCloud and safety Josh Thomas are not dressed for the game.
