KC Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes wins AFC Player of Week award, his first since the opener

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes energized the Chiefs’ offense in a 41-14 road win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 10, and the league recognized his effort Wednesday.

He’s the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Mahomes turned in a magnificent performance in Las Vegas, completing 35 of 50 passes for 406 yards and five touchdowns (with no interceptions). That gave him a 127.6 passer rating. He led all quarterbacks in passing yards and passing touchdowns in Week 10.

The Chiefs recorded seven explosive plays of 20 yards or more against the Raiders’ defense, and Mahomes helped account for six of them.

Two went for touchdowns, as Mahomes connected with running back Darrel Williams for a 38-yard score and wide receiver Byron Pringle for a 22-yard TD. Mahomes’ other touchdown passes went to wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who hauled in two Sunday evening, and rookie tight end Noah Gray.

With Sunday’s output, Mahomes became the first player in league history to record three career games with at least 400 yards passing and five touchdowns in his first five seasons. He also owns six career game with 400 or more passing yards, and Week 10 was his 30th game with 300-plus passing yards since he became the Chiefs’ starter in 2018.

Wednesday’s announcement marked Mahomes’ second AFC Offensive Player of the Week in 2021. He previously garnered the honor in Week 1.

Mahomes has won seven career AFC Offensive Player of the Week award since he became the Chiefs’ starting quarterback in 2018. He joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas (eight) and Dante Hall (seven) as Chiefs who won the award seven times or more.
