Another victory for Chiefs’ Harrison Butker following his game-winning kick in LA

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker capped off his game-winning effort in Week 2 with league recognition.

Butker was chosen the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, the NFL announced Wednesday morning.

The fourth-year pro nailed three field goals, including a career-high 58-yard kick in regulation, during the Chiefs’ 23-20 overtime win over the Los Angeles Chargers. His 30-yard field goal at the end of regulation sent the game to an extra period, where he drilled another 58-yard field goal to seal the game.

The game-winning effort becomes more impressive given he actually did it three times. Butker initially made one from 53 yards, but a 5-yard false start penalty nullified the kick. On the second attempt, the Chargers called timeout shortly before he nailed the kick. The freeze-out strategy, however, didn’t pay off as Butker calmly stepped up and drilled the third attempt.

Butker’s two 58-yard field goals tied a franchise record for longest field goal made with Nick Lowery. Butker now has 11 career made field goals of 50 or more yards, an achievement that passed Ryan Succop (nine) for third-most in team history.

This is the fourth time Butker was chosen AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. He previously won the award twice in 2017 as a rookie (Week 8 and Week 16), then secured the recognition again in Week 9 of the 2019 season.
