Chiefs owner Clark Hunt voices support of Mahomes, Mathieu on social-justice issues
Chiefs coach Andy Reid has praised quarterback Patrick Mahomes and safety Tyrann Matheiu for speaking out against racial injustice.
Now, Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt has publicly added his support, too.
During an appearance on the team’s weekly Watch Party Wednesday show, Hunt stood behind his two star players, both of whom participated in a video alongside other prominent NFL players last week to raise awareness about the Black Lives Matter movement.
“I think we all know what great leaders the two of them are, and that’s both on the field and off,” Hunt said of Mahomes and Mathieu. “It’s been so great to see the two of them out front here the last couple of weeks as our country faces some very difficult challenges.
“We’ve got a chance to really make a difference now, to really make some progress on racism, and guys like Patrick and Tyrann are leading their teammates. And hopefully the Kansas City Chiefs as an organization will be able to have a big impact as a result.”
The country and world have seen widespread protests since the death of George Floyd on May 25. Floyd, a Black man, died following an encounter with since-fired and criminally charged Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is white.
Mahomes and Mathieu used their platforms on social media to speak out against racism before participating in the video, which quickly went viral. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell responded shortly thereafter in a separate video voicing his support and the support of the league.
Hunt has now publicly joined a small group of NFL owners who’ve supported their players’ efforts in decrying social injustice.
In recent weeks, the Saints’ Gayle Benson, Ravens’ Steve Bisciotti, Eagles’ Jeff Lurie, Titans’ Amy Adams Strunk, 49ers’ Jed York and Jaguars’ Shahid Khan have condemned racism and police brutality.
