Report: Wichita’s Adrian Griffin to join OKC Thunder coaching staff

Former Wichitan Adrian Griffin will become an assistant coach on Billy Donovan’s staff with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, ESPN reported Thursday.

Griffin, 41, was most recently an assistant for the Orlando Magic and had been interviewed for the Magic’s head-coaching opening before the club hired former Pacers coach Frank Vogel.

Griffin will replace Monty Williams, who is leaving the team following the February death of his wife, who was killed in a car accident.

Griffin played on the last Seattle SuperSonics team in 2007-08 with then-rookie Kevin Durant, before the team moved to Oklahoma City in 2008. Griffin played nine NBA seasons with the Celtics, Mavericks, Rockets, Bulls and Sonics.

At East High, Griffin was an All-State forward who led the Blue Aces to the 1992 Class 6A championship. He signed with Seton Hall and was part of the Pirates’ last Big East Tournament-winning team (1993). He averaged 16.2 points and 8.3 rebounds as a senior.
