Wichita’s Wind Surge baseball team is changing its name next season
Wichita’s Double-A baseball team announced Saturday that it will be officially changing its name to the Wichita Turbo Tubs next year.
Wind Surge general manager Matt Hamilton said the new name and brand pays tribute to Wichita-specific attributes, including the aerospace industry, the Riverfest bathtub races and the beloved troll statue hidden along the Arkansas River. The color scheme — turquoise, purple and orange — also pays homage to Kansas’ iconic sunsets, he said.
“This is more than a name change. It’s a celebration of who we are and where we’re headed,” he said. “The community asked for this, and we have made the bold change. Baseball should be fun, memorable and uniquely tied to our community. The Turbo Tubs captures that energy in a way that fans of all ages can rally behind.”
The Turbo Tubs is one of the Wind Surge’s alter egos that it has played under at some games since 2022. Logos posted on Minor League Baseball’s website show a green troll in a captain’s hat racing a bathtub with an orange and white sail and a jet engine across water.
Hamilton said the rebranding follows years of community feedback asking for a team name and identity that better represents the city’s unique aspects.
For now, the Wind Surge name and logo will be retired, but they could make a reappearance at a throwback night some time in the future, he said.
In addition to the name change, the Turbo Tubs rebrand will include updates to uniforms, logos, merchandise and the mascot, the organization said.
