Wichita Wind Surge

How a goose traffic jam created Wind Surge’s viral alter ego: Wichita Honkers

What started as a 10-minute traffic delay on McLean Boulevard has turned into one of the most talked-about alternate identities in Minor League Baseball.

The Wichita Wind Surge’s newest alter ego — the Wichita Honkers — rolled out Thursday and quickly went viral for its absurdity, as merchandise orders flooded in from across the country and social media lit up with reactions to the goose-themed brand.

The idea, improbably enough, traces back to general manager Matt Hamilton’s first week in Wichita in February 2024 after arriving from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, where he was an assistant general manager.

Hamilton was driving to Equity Bank Park when he encountered a very Wichita problem: a full-scale Canada geese roadblock along the Arkansas River corridor.

“So I was stuck in the road in this traffic jam because a bunch of geese were just standing in the road and not moving,” Hamilton said. “I laid on my horn to get them to move and they just looked at me, like, ‘Can I help you?’ So that’s where the idea was kind of born, me slamming on the horn and them honking back at me.”

When he arrived at the office late and shared the story, the staff didn’t treat it like a freak occurrence. They instead told Hamilton it was a rite of passage.

That’s when he knew he was onto something.

“A lot of people got a good laugh out of it because they’ve encountered the same thing with our unofficial crossing guards,” Hamilton said. “And we’ve still got a lot of fun to generate from the brand. It’s only going to get more kooky and crazy. This is the fun part of minor league baseball, where you can bring ideas like this to life.”

How the Wichita Honkers name came to be

While the name sounds like a quick, humorous brainstorm, turning the Honkers into an on-field identity required a lengthy process. Minor league alternate brands must pass through multiple layers of approval at the league and manufacturer levels before they ever reach a jersey or cap.

Hamilton said the typical timeline is well over a year from concept to clearance. Designs must pass copyright and intellectual property checks through Major League Baseball, then be approved by New Era, the official on-field cap provider.

The Wind Surge began formally submitting Honkers materials in November 2024. Final approval just recently came, nearly two years after the original goose encounter.

That long runway is why minor league clubs often like to swing big when it comes to alternate identity ideas. If you’re going to invest that much time, the payoff needs to be memorable.

And in minor league baseball marketing, memorable usually means bold, weird and hyper-local.

How the Wind Surge used an influencer for Honkers launch

The Honkers brand also broke new ground in how it was launched. Hamilton said the Wind Surge became the first of roughly 120 affiliated minor league franchises to use a social media influencer as the primary logo designer.

The team partnered with popular graphic designer Emily Morgan, who has nearly 500,000 combined followers across TikTok and Instagram. Her design touches embedded hidden meaning into the mark: the goose’s wing is shaped to resemble a “WS” for Wind Surge, while a geese-crossing sign is reimagined as a baseball diamond backdrop.

Morgan unveiled the logo and identity to her audience Thursday as part of the coordinated rollout, instantly extending the reach beyond Kansas.

“From a marketing perspective, we thought it would be really good to have someone like that roll it out to her 500,000 followers,” Hamilton said. “That helped us get exposure, not just in Wichita and Kansas, but nationwide. And that’s exactly what happened.”

According to Hamilton, Honkers merchandise was sold in 20 states on the first day alone.

When is the Honkers takeover coming to Wichita?

The Wind Surge will fully transform into the Wichita Honkers four times during the 2026 season, wearing custom jerseys and caps and rebranding the in-stadium experience around the theme.

The Honkers dates are scheduled for May 2-3, July 11 and Sept. 8.

“We’re going to do some funny, on-field promotions that ties in to the Honkers brand,” Hamilton said. “We’ll have stuff throughout the stadium. The idea is that whenever fans come to theme nights, we’re going to give them an immersive experience. So this gives us an opportunity to have some fun with it.”

The Honkers joins a growing list of Wind Surge alternate identities, including the Turbo Tubs, Tumba Vacas de Wichita, the Wichita Monrovians and the returning Wichita Chili Buns.

Judging by Thursday’s reaction on social media, the Honkers may have been the most talked-about yet. And in minor league baseball, buzz is currency.

“I think the overall reaction has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Madison Johnson, the team’s director of marketing. “It’s fun to see people have a reaction to the name and then also get excited about baseball coming back in April. It’s a great way to engage the fans.”

Wichita opens the 2026 season with a three-game homestand against Northwest Arkansas beginning April 2 at 6:35 p.m.
