Wichita Wind Surge manager Ramon Borrego promoted to big leagues by Minnesota Twins
The only manager the Wichita Wind Surge has ever known is headed to the majors.
Ramon Borrego received a promotion on Thursday, as the Minnesota Twins announced him as their new first base and infield coach. A replacement in Wichita is expected to be announced by early February at the latest.
Borrego, 46, has managed the Wind Surge since their inaugural season in 2021, winning a pair of division titles and back-to-back league championship series appearance in 2021 and 2022. He earned Manager of the Year honors in 2021 and sent 34 Wind Surge players to Major League Baseball.
He becomes the third coach in franchise history to be promoted to the majors.
While Borrego was fairly new to Wichita, he has spent the majority of his entire adult life in the Twins’ organization. He signed as a player with Minnesota in 1995, played in the Twins’ system from 1996-02 and then helped run the Twins’ Venezuelan Baseball Academy from 2004-08. After that, in 2009, he helped run the Dominican Republic Baseball Academy.
He has been a manager in the Twins’ organization for the last 15 seasons, leading his team to the postseason in five of the past seven seasons, including winning the 2018 Florida State League Championship with Class-A Fort Myers.
The Wind Surge open the 2025 season in Springfield, Missouri on April 4. The club’s home opener at Riverfront Stadium is slated for April 8 against the Midland Rock Hounds.
