Wichita Wind Surge inching closer to securing second Texas League playoff berth
The Wichita Wind Surge are inching closer to potentially being able to wrap up another playoff berth in their final homestand of the 2022 season next week.
Wichita has won three straight games on the road against Springfield, which entered the week as the closest team to the Wind Surge in the Texas League North standings.
A 7-2 win on Friday opened up a 7-game lead for Wichita with 14 games remaining, including the final two games of the series in Springfield this weekend and a 6-game homestand at Riverfront Stadium against last-place Northwest Arkansas next week starting on Tuesday.
A change to the Double-A playoff structure in Minor League Baseball means the division winner from the first-half of the season plays the winner of the second-half of the season in the semifinals of the playoffs. Tulsa secured a spot by winning the first half, while Wichita’s 35-20 record is seven games better than Springfield and Arkansas in the second half.
Wichita plated six runs in the top of the sixth inning of Friday’s game with RBI hits by Yunior Severino, DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and Edouard Julien to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 6-1 lead.
In Wednesday’s game, the Surge erased a ninth-inning deficit for the first time all season (in 41 possible games) when Julien delivered a bases-loaded single to plate two runners in a 5-4 victory over Springfield.
