See 2 alternate angles of third-base coach’s signal on key play in Royals’ loss

Did he or didn’t he?

Royals Twitter, the name fans use for sharing their opinions and deep thoughts on X, wasn’t sure what exactly happened on a key play Monday night in the Royals’ 8-5 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston.

The Royals trailed 8-1 heading into the eighth inning but scored four times and nearly had more. They had runners on first and second with two outs when Bobby Witt Jr. hit a single to right field.

But Boston’s Wilyer Abreu made a good throw home and nabbed Nick Loftin trying to score, ending KC’s comeback attempt. If Loftin had stopped at third, Vinnie Pasquantino would have batted with the bases loaded.

Who knows what might have happened?

Royals manager Matt Quatraro told reporters after the game that third-base coach Vance Wilson put up a stop sign.

“Bobby hit that ball really hard, one-hopper (to Abreu),” Quatraro said. “Lofty ran through the stop sign. They made a great throw to the plate.“

Some fans were initially unsure if Wilson signaled that Loftin should stop (and the Royals broadcasters didn’t see the sign either).

Here is a replay from the Boston Red Sox broadcast, and you can see Wilson pointed to the bag.

This overhead view of the play also shows Wilson point at the bag and not send Loftin to the plate.
