Royals sign 37-year-old former Cy Young Award winner to minor-league deal
The Royals announced Wednesday they signed left-hander Dallas Keuchel to a minor-league contract.
Keuchel, the 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner who two years later helped the Houston Astros win their first World Series title, last pitched with the Brewers a year ago.
In four starts with Milwaukee, Keuchel had a 5.40 ERA in 16 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out 11. During his 13 seasons in the majors, Keuchel has a 103-92 record with a 4.04 ERA.
From 2014-2020, Keuchel had an 81-55 record with a 3.25 ERA while with the Astros, Braves and White Sox.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Keuchel reached 92 mph in a workout last week and he’ll join Triple-A Omaha. And if Keuchel is promoted to the Royals, he would receive a $2 million prorated salary.
While the Royals would love to catch lightning in a bottle with Keuchel, the Storm Chasers need help with their rotation. They already have had 15 pitchers make at least one start this season.
Keuchel, 37, will join a rotation that includes 45-year-old Rich Hill.
