Another Royals injury paves way for red-hot prospect to make MLB debut vs. Pirates
The Kansas City Royals have added another talented rookie into the mix.
On Tuesday, the club promoted infielder Cam Devanney from Triple-A Omaha. Royals. Devanney, 28, performed well with the Omaha Storm Chasers. He hit .272 with 18 home runs and 55 RBIs in 69 games.
“It’s really nice,” Devanney said. “I’ve gotten to know a lot of these guys really well, whether it be in Triple-A or spring training. So it doesn’t feel super foreign, but I’m just super excited to be here.”
The Royals placed veteran outfielder Mark Canha on the 10-day injured list with left elbow epicondylitis (commonly known as tennis elbow). To make room on the 40-man roster, Cole Ragans was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Devanney can play multiple positions. He is a shortstop by trade but has earned reps in left field this season. He logged 14 innings in the outfield this year.
“You know, I think how you survive in this game is being adaptable and versatile,” Devanney said. “I understand the dynamic up here and what they are looking for. So I’m just trying to fit their needs and try to help the team win however I can.”
The Royals acquired Devanney from the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023. He was part of an offseason trade that sent reliever Taylor Clarke to the Brewers.
Clarke rejoined the Royals’ organization this spring. He will now be teammates with Devanney as the Royals continue a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
“We joke about it a little bit. And yeah, it is funny,” Devanney said. “And Ryan Brady was the third guy in that trade and we are all still here. So it is pretty cool.”
Devanney was not in the starting lineup Tuesday.
Royals manager Matt Quatraro does look forward to getting him in the lineup. At the moment, the Royals are without Canha and infielder Michael Massey, who has missed 26 games with a left ankle sprain.
“Cam had a great year in Triple-A and he had a good year last year,” Quatraro said. “He’s producing there and he has played really well in the infield. He has played some outfield as well. So his versatility and another right-handed bat is something we are looking for.”
Canha received an injection to treat his injury Tuesday. He hit his first home run against the Arizona Diamondbacks last Friday.
“He will be down a couple of days from that and it will be dependent on the symptoms of how quickly he starts to come back,” Quatraro said.
