The Sunflower Collegiate Baseball League is filling the void of baseball in Wichita this summer.
No professional baseball will be played in Wichita this summer since the destruction of Lawrence-Dumont Stadium left the Wichita Wingnuts without a home. In its place, a $75 million stadium is currently being built for the Triple-A farm team for the Miami Marlins that should be ready by next April.
But there will be summer collegiate baseball in the city. Sunflower commissioner Casey Walkup told The Eagle the league will host showcase doubleheaders every Tuesday night this summer at Wichita State’s Eck Stadium.
Games, starting June 4 and running until July 23, are scheduled for 5:30 and 8 p.m. with tickets sold for $5. All games will be aired live on KGSO, 1410-AM.
“With no professional baseball in Wichita this summer and no other summer collegiate ball until the NBC tournament in August, we wanted to provide an opportunity and an avenue for baseball fans to enjoy the game at a great venue and see some competitive baseball,” Walkup said. “We want to make this as inviting as possible to give players and fans a reason to want to come be a part of the Sunflower league.”
The Sunflower expanded in the offseason with the Derby Twins, El Dorado Broncos, Great Bend Bat Cats and Haysville Aviators joining in addition to the original members of league in the Andale Warhawks, Cheney Diamond Dawgs, Hutchinson Monarchs, Mulvane Patriots, Newton Rebels, Salina Shock and Wichita Sluggers.
