With 12 locations in play for state high school baseball and softball tournaments that began Thursday across Kansas, it wasn’t farfetched, even from the outset, to think there might be problems with spring weather here or there.
Because it’s May, and because it’s Kansas.
What the Kansas State High School Activities Association got, however, was problems almost everywhere.
Out of the 12 sites on Thursday, 10 experienced major delays with weather that pushed tournaments that were supposed to run Thursday and Friday into, so far, Saturday, Sunday and in one case, Monday.

Only Class 5A softball, at Wichita’s Two Rivers Youth Club, and Class 2-1A softball in Pratt were able to get in all four quarterfinal games on Thursday and remained on schedule as of Friday morning.
“It’s been a little bit of a mess, to state the obvious,” said KSHSAA assistant executive director Jeremy Holaday. “The schools have adjusted pretty well, but it’s just been so many moving pieces with 12 different sites. And it’s not as simple as picking up and moving one thing to another field, especially when you’re talking about 36 umps on each side (six at each site) for baseball and softball and fields reserved for certain times.
“We’re trying to make the best of what we can do in a tough situation, but to make everyone happy is just not gonna happen. We’re trying to keep people as up to date as we can with our Twitter page and our website and try to give people as much info as we can as we get it.”
“If you’re in from western Kansas, for example, you have to make decisions about travel and hotel rooms,” Holaday said. “Do we go home? Do we stay? We’re trying to get them as much help on our end as possible.”
