Kennedy Brown Derby freshman
Brown, who’s 6-foot-5, helped lead Derby to a 19-4 record and the Class 6A tournament for the first time since 2002. It was also Derby’s first winning record since 2008-09. Brown averaged 13.0 points and 10.1 rebounds, shooting 43 percent from the field. She also averaged 4.0 blocks.
Kendrian Elliott South senior
Elliott, a 6-2 forward and four-time All-Metro selection, helped lead South (25-0) to its fourth straight City League title and fourth straight Class 6A title. Elliott, 96-4 as a four-year starter, averaged 13.4 points and more than 10 rebounds. She finished with 1,315 career points, 15th in City League history.
Ericka Mattingly South senior
Mattingly, a 5-9 guard and two-time All-Metro selection, helped lead South (25-0) to its fourth straight City League title and fourth straight Class 6A title. Mattingly, 96-4 as a four-year starter, averaged 11.7 points, more than six assists, four rebounds and nearly four steals.
Cami Richardson Hesston senior
At 5-10, Richardson played all five positions based on what Hesston needed. She averaged 17.9 points, 7 rebounds, 3.6 steals, 3.7 assists and led the Swathers to an 18-5 record. She was 69-6 in the past three seasons with two Class 3A titles. She ranks first in Hesston history with 318 career assists and scored 1,152 career points.
Madi Schmelzer Garden Plain senior
Schmelzer, a 5-6 guard, led Garden Plain to a 21-3 record and a berth in the Class 3A tournament. A quick guard, she could get to the rim and score — she averaged a team-high 12.8 points — but she used that speed even more on defense, where she averaged 3.2 steals. She also averaged 2.5 assists.
Taylor Dugan Carroll coach
Dugan, Carroll’s fourth-year coach, led the Eagles to a 20-5 record and third place in Class 5A. It was Carroll’s best finish since it took third in 2009-10. Carroll has improved its record each year under Dugan (64-28) and has advanced to the 5A tournament the past two seasons.
All-Metro selection process
This is the 12th year for All-Metro teams selected by The Eagle, recognizing the best high school athletes in team sports throughout Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties.
Last month, The Eagle sent nomination ballots to all basketball coaches at the 40 high schools in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties.
Coaches were asked to return the ballots with nominations of the best players within those counties that they saw this season, including their own players.
Joanna Chadwick and Tony Adame selected the teams after tabulating nominations, their own evaluation of players and additional input from coaches.
Coming Sunday
The Eagle’s 55th annual All-State boys and 41st annual All-State girls basketball teams, honoring the best players from across Kansas. All-classification teams will be included.
