Joanna Chadwick of The Eagle has been named Oscar Stauffer Award winner, honoring a sportswriter of the year, by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

Chadwick, 42, has been covering high school sports for The Eagle and VarsityKansas.com since 1996. Her past work has also been honored by the Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association and the Missouri Valley chapter of the U.S. Tennis Association.

Since 2013, Chadwick has developed the VarsityKansas.com Skills Day, an annual one-day camp in multiple sports for Wichita-area children with instruction from high school and college coaches. Last year, she initiated a shoe drive that collected more than 200 pairs for children in need.

Mike Hammett, sports director of KSAL radio in Salina, was named sportscaster of the year.
