South girls 55, Carroll 23
The basics: Three-time defending Class 6A champion South continued its march toward an unbeaten season with a blowout win over the City League’s second-place team.
Key stretch: South (15-0, 11-0 City League) led 14-4 after the first quarter thanks to some key offense — and defense — from sophomore guard Trezure Jobe. Jobe hit her second three-pointer of the first quarter to give the Titans an 11-2 lead with 1:59 left, then stole the ball on Carroll’s ensuing possession and pushed the ball up the court for a layup and 13-2 lead.
Standouts: Jobe scored 11 points, all in the first half, and hit three three-pointers. South senior center and Tulsa signee Kendrian Elliott scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Ashley Carrillo led Carroll (12-4, 10-2) with eight points.
What they said: “We haven’t had an undefeated season yet, so that’s something we’re working toward,” Elliott said. “This game isn’t any different than any other team we prepare to play because our practice are pretty intense and hard because we want to make that state run. That didn’t change because we were playing Bishop Carroll.”
South coach Antwain Scales’ scouting report had Jobe ready to attack from the outside.
“We came out and knew they were going to play a zone,” Jobe said. “So we knew we would have to knock down some shots to expand their zone or make them play man.”
What it means: South has five regular-season games left and four of those opponents — East, West, Kapaun and Northwest — have losing records. Only Heights, now tied for second with Carroll after beating North on Tuesday, looks like it could be a challenge for the Titans.
