Heights boys 57, Maize 50
The basics: Heights’ long and lengthy defense caused too much problems for Maize in the City League vs. AV-CTL basketball series finale. It was Maize’s first loss.
Key stretch: Heights outscored the Eagles 40-28 in the second half and overtime period after Maize held a 22-17 lead at the halftime break. The Falcons began overtime on an 10-0 run before the Eagles were able to break into the scoring column.
Standouts: Heights’ Davon Gill led all scorers with 19 and teammate Aaron Williams added 12. Maize’s Drake Spence had 17 points.
What they said: “It was a great game,” Heights coach Joe Auer said. “Two excellent teams playing, they faced a lot of challenges for us that we haven’t faced yet this year. They’re long and physical around the rim. I thought our guys performed well and didn’t let that get to them, this was a huge win for us.”
What it means: Maize (7-1) and Heights (8-1) could meet again in the Dodge City Tournament of Champions next week.
